Welcome to HomeFresh News!

After many chilly starts to the day, you can feel
the air is finally getting warmer. And with
the sprinkling of rain we've had the air has a
different fragrance too.
Now that Spring is officially here, we have lots
of new produce becoming available...
Congratulations to Barambah Organics, one of our most popular suppliers, for
winning the Dairy Industry Association's QLD Champion Product Award 2008 for
their Crow Ash Brie.
What's so good about their brie?
Barambah's Crows Ash brie is a rich creamy brie with a white mould exterior
in a coating of vineyard ash. The skin becomes crunchy as it ages and the
inner is an oozy, golden texture with a rich aroma. Fantastic with
crunchy sourdough or with
Dr
Karg crispbreads or a
nutty megagrain..
If you've been to the doctor for any cancer screening tests then you'll know
that one of the first things they ask about is whether there is any history of
cancer in your family. While genetics is an important marker for cancer,
your chances of getting cancer aren't just about your heritage.
The University of Texas' MD Anderson's Cancer Center web site reports
that five to ten percent of cancer cases can come from a person's genetic
make-up. The flip side of this statistic is that ninety percent of cancer cases
are influenced by environmental factors.
If someone in your family has battled cancer, researchers are now able to
perform specific tests to find out if you carry altered genes which can cause
certain types of cancers. If that's you then its a good idea to get the tests you
need so you know where you stand.
Aside from genetics, the most important part of cancer prevention is eating a
well-balanced diet. This means incorporating more fruits and vegetables, meats
that are low in fat and plenty of heart-healthy whole grains into your diet.
Certain vegetables, such as tomatoes and broccoli, carry antibodies that support
cancer prevention of the prostate for men.
If you can't eat all your servings at one sitting, try to snack on them
throughout the day. And because today's society is surrounded by processed
foods, reading nutrition labels is important when going to the store or buying
online. Avoid
foods that tend to be high in saturated fats, high fructose corn syrups and
hydrogenated oils of any kind.
Once you have figured out how to eat healthier, the next step is making time to
exercise. Finding ways to exercise doesn't necessarily mean joining a gym and
hiring a personal trainer. Exercise can come in simple forms, like vacuuming,
walking your dog or playing with your children. Doctors recommend that you get
at least thirty minutes of physical activity 3 to 4 times a week.
Find ways to make exercising fun for you and your family by going for walks
together or buying everyone bicycles. Not only will this help you include
exercising into your weekly routine, but you will also be teaching your loved
ones how to live healthier.
Brookfarm, a macadamia farm in St Helena overlooking Byron Bay, is a long
term project for Pamela and Martin Brook. They first started the farm in
1989 when they were living and working in Melbourne.
It wasn't until 1999 when the trees they had planted were at the stage of
producing a reasonable crop that they were able to move to St Helena and become
full-time farmers.
They wanted to make macadamia product lines that weren't just about roasting
them or coating them in chocolate. Easier said than done! They
worked for another two years on product development and research before they
were able to get their first products out the door.
Thankfully, all the hard work has paid off! Their Macadamia Oils have
collected several awards and delighted the taste buds of many loyal fans.
They produce a pure
Macadamia Oil but they also have
Macadamia Oil infused
with Lemon Myrtyle and Macadamia Oil infused with Lime and Chilli.
These blends are a great way to add a different flavour to salad dressings,
mayonnaise, pesto and sauces. It is also a great taste boost for fish,
chicken, lamb, pasta and roasted vegetables.
Some Macadamia Oil facts:
- widely considered the healthiest edible oil as
it has higher monosaturates than extra Virgin
Olive Oil
- can be cooked at very high temperatures yet
still retains its gentle nutty taste and health
properties
- has most balanced ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6
fatty acids of any oil
- contains no trans fatty acids
- Aborigines have enjoyed Macadamias for
thousands of years
- trees were exported to Hawaii in the 1890s as
shade for livestock
- they are often referred to in America as the
Hawaiian nut
- in 1995 production in Australia was larger
than in America making Australia the world's
largest producer
Brookfarm also produce a very more-ish and decadent
Toasted Macadamia Muesli. Be warned,
once you try it, its difficult to settle for anything ordinary!
