Welcome to HomeFresh News!

With a lot of produce available year round, it can be difficult to know when the 'right' season for produce comes around.

Eating food in season is easier on your wallet and the produce has more flavour.

Now that Spring is officially here look out for asparagus, bananas, beans, bok choy, broad beans, lettuce, radishes, sweetcorn, and watercress.

What's Fresh?

If you grew up on frozen beans boiled to within an inch of their life and have had trouble revisiting them since, its time to think about new ways to buy and cook them.

There are lots of beans available now to choose from.  You can pick from Roman beans (also known as the Italian bean), butter beans, snake beans, broad beans, and regular green beans.

Beans aren't usually a first choice for salads but this recipe may just change your mind.  This is great served with grilled fish, chicken or BBQ steak.

Green Bean & Hazelnut Salad

400g green beans, topped and tailed
½ cup sliced hazelnuts, toasted

Dressing:
1 dessertspoon Dijon mustard
juice of ½ lemon
½ cup thick cream
salt & freshly ground black pepper

Boil the beans for a few minutes in boiling salted water. Refresh under cold water, drain and dry. Place in a serving bowl.

Combine the ingredients for the dressing in a small bowl. Pour over the beans and toss. Sprinkle with hazelnuts and serve.

Q&A - Is Our Packaging Environmentally Friendly?

Although it may not fit with widely held views of what is environmentally friendly, using polystyrene boxes is actually an environmentally sound choice.  This is because we use recycled polystyrene boxes that have been thoroughly cleaned and re-conditioned.

The other reason is that any broken or chipped boxes are returned and recycled.  There are 4 uses for polystyrene:

. it can be reduced to granules and mixed with new materials to make new products like insulation board.

. the granules can be used on its own or mixed with plaster or concrete to make a lightweight building material.  For example, polystyrene is made into bricks that are used to build houses in South East Asia.  Polystyrene makes an excellent material for bricks because of its protective properties.  This is not only a cost effective solution, houses built with these bricks are cool in summer and warm in the cooler months.

. it can be ground and mixed with soil and compost to promote aeration. Studies have confirmed that plant growth is better with this type of aeration.

. it can be melted and converted into pellets and used to manufacture simple polystyrene products like coat hangers, video cassette and cd casings, stationery items and plant pots.

One of the reasons that polystyrene is 100% recyclable is because it is composed of 98% air.  With only 2% polystyrene it is actually a highly efficient use of a raw material.

While polystyrene is derived from oil, a non-renewable resource, it represents less than 0.1% of crude oil usage.  Because polystyrene is so energy efficient, when its used in things like an insulation panel, the reduced heating demand compensates for the oil used in its production. (Typically, for every kg of oil used in panel manufacture, about 200kg will be saved in reduced heating demand over the lifespan of the panel.)

You can help by making sure that you leave your delivery box out each week in the same location as your delivery so that we can collect them and continue to recycle.

Supplier Spotlight - Squeaky Green

Squeaky Green produce a range of eco-friendly salads, herbs and greens that are free of pesticides, herbicides and soil organisms.  They use bio-controls and organic crop practices to keep their crops healthy and pest free.  They use natural marine and fish based fertilizers to supply all trace elements.  This makes healthy plants and means that their produce is tastier, crisper, has great colour and a longer storage life.

The establishment of Squeaky Green occurred over 10 years ago when Michael O'Dea and his family moved to South East Queensland following his successful treatment for cancer and his subsequent recovery.  Although motivated by improving the health of their family, they knew that others would also prefer nutritious, pesticide-free food given the choice.
