What's Fresh?

June is Mandarin season. We have Imperial Mandarins right now, and will get other varieties as we get further into the growing season.

Imperial mandarins have a fine, smooth, glossy skin with sweet, orange coloured flesh and a few seeds.

Mandarins originated in China and were so highly regarded they were named after the officials of the Imperial Court, the mandarins.

Mandarins make a great snack.   They are high in Vitamin C with around 46mg per 100g, so two  Mandarins will give you 35% of the recommended daily allowance.  They are also a good source of dietary fibre and low in natural sugars.

Also being easy to peel makes them an easy addition to school lunch boxes.  No need to worry about extra packaging to keep them fresh.

Just in case kids need encouraging to eat this yummy fruit, here is a recipe just for them.

Fruity Marshmallow Kebabs

Mandarins
Marshmallows
Kiwi fruit
Strawberries
Honey
Strawberry yoghurt (optional)

Peel mandarin segments, then thread onto bamboo skewers and alternating with peeled kiwifruit pieces and marshmallows.

Puree strawberries and season with honey to taste. Pour over kebabs and serve.

For a creamier texture stir in strawberry yoghurt to the strawberry and honey puree.

Q&A - 5 Reasons to Go Organic

Perhaps you've heard that organic food is better for you and better for the planet but you're a bit short on specifics.  Over the next few issues, we're going to cover a few reasons why going organic is a wise choice.

  1. Reduce Amount of Potentially Harmful Additives Switching from non-organic food to organic produce means you can avoid eating up to 2kgs of food additives each year.  Food additives have been linked with symptoms like allergic reactions, rashes, headaches, asthma, growth retardation and hyperactivity in children.
  2. If Breastfeeding Reduce Risk to Infants
Pesticides from non-organic food not only affect you but if you are breastfeeding then they are likely affecting your child as well.  A 1995 Victorian study of breastmilk found that infants are regularly exposed to several pesticides at levels greater than the 'acceptable daily intake' (Quinsey, et al 1995).
  3. Become More Healthy the Easy Way
You can still eat the same products but switch to organic versions of those products and you've found an easy way to boost your health.  An analysis of 40 studies comparing organic and conventional food found organic plant based food is, on average, more nutritious.  Organic food was found to have up to 25% more polyphenols, antioxidants and phytonutrients - plant compounds that help combat cancer (Organic Center State of Science Review 2008).
  4. Reduce Developmental Problems in Children
It has been reported that neurodevelopment adnormalities in children can be caused or intensifed by prenatal/early exposure to pesticides and chemicals in food. (Guillette, et al, 1998).
  5. Reduce Exposure to Potentially Harmful Insecticides
By eating organic produce you can eliminate your dietary exposure to insecticides.  Some insecticides are known to be developmental neurotoxins (chemicals that injure cells in the nervous system).
