What's Fresh?

Apple season is now approaching and our organic Gala Apples are lovely and crisp, perfect for eating fresh and a good size for school lunches.

Gala apples originated in New Zealand from crossing a Kidd's orange and a gold delicious.

When buying Gala apples we look for apples that are firm with smooth and clean skin.  We avoid apples with soft or dark spots.  If the apple skin wrinkles when we rub our thumb across it, then we know the apple has probably been in cold storage too long or has not been kept cool.

TIP:  Stop a peeled apple from browning by brushing it with lemon juice.

Q&A - How can I revive my body without doing a full on detox?

It's about this time of the year that many people start thinking about how they can get healthier.  This isn't only because of overindulging in too much food and alcohol that typically accompanies the festive season.  It's also about tackling the new year in the best shape possible.

While a full on body detox maybe too much for you to fit into your busy schedule, there are a number of simple and easy measures you can take which will have you feeling and looking healthier.

  • Drink lots of water - one of the easiest ways to make sure you drink more water is to get into the habit of carrying a water bottle with you wherever you go.  Another way is to set yourself a goal of how much you want to drink each day. 2 litres per day is a good minimum to start with so if you have a 500ml bottle then you know you need to empty it 4 times to hit your goal.

  • Make changes to your diet where you can - switch to whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Make these foods the basis of your diet and try to steer away from packaged and fast foods that are high on fats and sugars and low on nutrients.

  • First thing on waking, drink 2 large glasses of water with the juice of a fresh lemon, lime or orange.  This will cleanse your liver.

  • Sweat once a day - getting some exercise into your day is great for your body but also a good way to relieve and reduce stress.

  • Remember to breath!  Slow, deep breathing is the most efficient way to breath as it helps rid your body of carbon dioxide and toxic gases.  This is key for properly oxygenating your lungs, bloodstream, heart and whole brain.  Focus on your breath at traffic lights, whenever you're waiting for something, whilst sitting at your computer periodically during the day.

  • Add a vegetable juice to your morning routine (see recipe below).  This is a great way to wake up your digestive system and increase your vegetable intake.

Start Your Day Right Juice

2 carrots
1/2 apple
1 celery stick

Run the above ingredients through a juicer and drink straight away for maximum benefit.

The above quantities are for 1 person so if you're making juice for more people then adjust accordingly.

You can add extra items to your juice depending on your preferences.  Beetroot, parsley, ginger and cucumber are popular additions.

TIP:  If you add ginger make it a small amount to begin with.  Too much can be overwhelming.
